ISSSTE´s new pension system
By Darío Ibarra
On June the 30th of this year ends the deadline for public sector workers, who pay to the ISSSTE pension system, to choose the regime under which they will retire. The new law sets the guidelines for the two options: a) stay in the previous scheme with some modifications, particularly with the possibility of increasing the retirement age, or b) to have individual accounts, in which case it is possible to stop working in the public sector and not lose the right to a pension. In some cases the law does not affect workers, in others, it may force them to work additional years before they can receive a pension. In any case, the law liberates the Institute from the burden of labor liabilities and gives workers the option of choosing the most desirable option.
